The e-tourist visa can be applied directly on the official website of the Indian immigration office (https://indianvisaonline.gov.in).

What is an Indian online tourist visa?

The ETA or Electronic Travel Authorization for India or e-Tourist Visa is an official document issued electronically by the Immigration Office of the Government of India to allow tourists of certain nationalities to enter India.

This is a document the travelers must apply before arriving in India. A 30 days electronic visa for India can be applied 4 to 30 days before your date of arrival in India.

The fees of an Indian e-visa depend on 3 elements:

1. The duration of your trip: the longer the stay, the higher the cost. For a 30-day trip, for example, the cost of an e-Visa is around $10. If the duration is 12 months, the price may exceed 40 dollars.

2. Your nationality: for some nationalities, the e-visa is free, such as for Argentinians and Uruguayans.

How far in advance one should apply for an e-visa for India?

For a 30-day e-Tourist Visa, it is advisable to apply at least 4 days before your arrival date in India and at the earliest 30 days before.

For a 12-month or 5-year e-Visa, the request can be made at least 7 days before your arrival and at most 120 days earlier.

Important: Your visa starts from the date you arrive in India and not the date of issuance of your visa. You must arrive in India between the date of issue and the date of expiry of your visa.

How much time does it take for the issuance of an E-visa?

E-tourist Visa: how to apply:

Important: Before starting the process of filling out the e-tourist visa form, it is essential to have a passport valid for at least 6 months from the planned date of travel to India. Do not forget to make a scanned copy of the passport page (pdf format) containing your personal information and your photo on white background in Jpg format.

Once the passport has been scanned and the photo taken, it is time to fill in the form found on the Indian Government website. To do this, you must follow these steps:

The passport photo format for the Indian e-visa:

  • Photos taken from mobile or cameras are accepted for India Visa 3.5 x 4.5cm. Your photo, therefore, does not need to be in the 5x5cm Indian format.
  • Photo should be recent and not more than 6months old.
  • Good quality scanned photo must be uploaded.
  • Selfies with a non-neutral background will not be accepted.
  • Photo should be mandatory in color. Black and white photos are not accepted.

The format for the scanned passport page

  • Page of your passport showing your photo and first and last name.
  • The page must be in PDF format not exceeding 1MB.
  • The page must be well readable and of good resolution.

You should know that the e-Visa is not eligible in all ports and airports in the country. However, 28 airports and 5 seaports are affected by this electronic visa.

Seaports are valid for the arrivals with an online e-visa: Cochin, Goa, Mangalore, Mumbai, and Chennai.
